Thermal Curtains in the Home Office: Controlling Light and Comfort
A desk by the window is pleasantly bright, but depending on the time of day it can cause strong reflections on the screen. In the colder months, a workspace right next to the glass can also feel uncomfortable. A dense thermal curtain works as flexible light control, as long as it is easy to use during the working day.
Watch where the sun falls on your desk
Check when direct sunlight hits the screen, desk or chair. Often it is enough to close the curtain only partly. This blocks the glare while the rest of the room keeps its daylight. A hanging system that moves easily and in small steps helps more than a panel that can only be fully opened or closed.

Choose fabric and position together
A very dense fabric can cut glare considerably, but it may also darken the whole work area. Think about whether you need a light extra sheer during the day, a second panel, or just one thermal layer you can slide where you need it. The effect depends on fabric, colour, window orientation and distance to the desk.
Plan enough width so the curtain can also cover the side edges of the glass when needed. When open, it should not fall over the desk, sockets, radiator or window handles. Measure the available space before ordering.
Comfort without blocking the radiator
A heavy curtain can make the area next to a cold window feel more comfortable. It does not, however, fix a leaking joint. If you feel a draught coming through the window, check the seals and frame as well – see insulating windows in winter. If a radiator sits below the window, the fabric should not needlessly block its heat.

A simple work routine
- Check the sun position and screen reflections before you start work
- Close the curtain only as far as needed for comfortable light
- Push the fabric aside when airing the room
- After work, adjust curtain and lighting to the time of day
You will find suitable models in made-to-measure thermal curtains. For a light daytime layer, choose made-to-measure sheer curtains. Whether a thermal or a blackout curtain suits you better is explained in thermal curtain or blackout curtain.
A well-placed thermal curtain makes light control at a home office window flexible. What matters is an easy-to-use system and a fabric that matches how much light you actually need.
