Licht mit Wirkung: Wie Leuchten und Leuchtmittel die Atmosphäre eines Raumes verändern

Light with an impact: How lamps and light sources change the atmosphere of a room

Light is one of the most effective factors in designing a room. It influences not only how functional a space is, but also how inviting and pleasant it feels. With the right combination of fixtures and suitable light sources, the atmosphere of a room can often be significantly improved with just a few adjustments.

Below are three simple but effective principles for using light strategically to quickly enhance your living space.

1. Only use ceiling lights as the sole light source where function is paramount.

There are rooms where ceiling lighting is necessary for functional reasons – for example, in kitchens or bathrooms. These areas are primarily designed for practical use and less for creating a cozy atmosphere. Often, a single, central light source is installed on the ceiling and used exclusively.

However, this light is often insufficient and, due to its overhead position, can quickly appear cold and uncomfortable. Therefore, in rooms intended to feel more inviting, it is advisable to combine several light sources.

In the kitchen, for example, dimmable recessed spotlights can be used to flexibly control the light intensity. Additionally, under-cabinet lights beneath the upper cabinets and wall lights next to windows or above the work surface create a warm layer of light. Even small table lamps on the work surface or vanity can create a surprisingly pleasant atmosphere.

2. Plan lighting according to usage zones first.

In living rooms, bedrooms, or workspaces, light should be used at different heights and from different directions. The first step is to define the functional zones: Where do people read, work, get dressed, or relax?

In the bedroom, a wall lamp next to the bed is ideal for reading or for switching off the light while lying down. A table lamp on the dresser helps with getting dressed and also provides soft, indirect light.

If the functional areas are sufficiently illuminated, additional atmospheric lighting can be added. Picture lights above selected artworks, subtle spotlights to highlight plants, or small, wireless lights on shelves and side tables lend the room depth and warmth – even where there is no power outlet nearby.

3. Choose the right light source for a warm lighting atmosphere

Not only the light fixture itself, but also the light source plays a crucial role. While the wattage indicates how bright a lamp is, the color temperature in Kelvin describes whether the light appears warm or cool.

For living spaces, it is recommended to use light bulbs with a color temperature of at least 2700 Kelvin. These produce a warm, pleasant light that instantly makes rooms feel more inviting. Information about the color temperature is usually clearly displayed on the packaging.

A well-thought-out lighting concept makes all the difference. As soon as you enter a room, you can tell whether the light is inviting or not. Different light sources, targeted placement, and the right color temperature create a space that is both functional and atmospheric. Good lighting invites you to linger – and transforms a room into a home.
