Thermal Curtains and Condensation: Airing Windows Properly

A thermal curtain can make the area by the window feel cosier. Moisture can still collect on cold panes, especially when warm room air meets the cool surface. Behind a curtain that stays closed, condensation is easy to miss. That is why it is worth taking a quick look at the glass, frame and fabric.

Why moisture forms on the glass

Room air contains water vapour. When it cools down on a cold window pane, water can settle on the glass or frame. How often this happens depends on humidity, ventilation, the condition of the window and the outside temperature, among other things. A thermal curtain does not remove the cause. It can even hide damp spots from view.

Don't seal off the window area completely

Make sure the curtain can be opened regularly and that some air can circulate between fabric and glass. The fabric should not rest against a wet pane or damp frame. Pay particular attention to the corners and the lower part of the window, where moisture can linger longer.

Remove moisture and air the room

Wipe away visible condensation promptly and let the frame dry. To air the room, pull the curtain aside and open the window as weather and room allow. Showering, cooking or drying laundry adds extra moisture to the home; afterwards, it is worth checking the affected windows.

Keep an eye on the fabric and the cause

If the curtain repeatedly touches damp surfaces, the fabric can get wet too. Let it dry completely and follow its care instructions – see our guide to cleaning and caring for thermal curtains. If a lot of condensation forms regularly, frames stay wet or stains appear, have the cause at the window and in the room checked. A curtain is not a solution for a structural damp problem.

Quick everyday check

  • Open the curtain regularly and look at glass and frame
  • Remove water promptly and let surfaces dry
  • Pull the fabric aside when airing
  • Don't treat recurring damp with the curtain alone

How to combine seals, film, blinds and curtains sensibly is explained in insulating windows in winter. All models are in made-to-measure thermal curtains.

With a simple routine, windows and thermal curtains stay dry more easily. Recurring moisture in particular deserves its own check.
