Thermal curtains in a rented flat: fitting without drilling
In rented flats, drill holes are often unwelcome or need the landlord's agreement. Even so, a thermal curtain without complicated fitting is often possible. The key is to choose a fixing that suits the wall, the window and the weight of the fabric.
Before fitting: check the window and surface
First check whether the window sash opens fully and whether handles, roller shutters or radiators are in the way. For clamp and tension systems, read the manufacturer's information on permitted width and load. A heavy quilted curtain makes greater demands than a light net curtain.
On delicate frames, use protective pads if the system manufacturer provides them. Test the fixing without the curtain first and check that it holds securely in normal use.
Three drill-free options
Clamp brackets on the window sash
Clamp brackets attach to the frame and are usually suitable for light to medium-weight solutions. Check compatibility with the frame profile and the maximum load. For very heavy thermal curtains this option may not be suitable.

Telescopic or tension rod
A tension rod can sit between two solid surfaces in a suitable window recess. It is quick to fit but needs a stable, sufficiently straight surface. If you open and close the curtain often, check regularly that it is still secure.

Adhesive fixing
Self-adhesive holders can be an option for light fabrics if the surface and product are suitable. Heat, humidity, wallpaper texture and the surface all affect adhesion. For heavy curtains, only use an adhesive solution that is expressly designed for that weight. An alternative is curtains with their own hook-and-loop fixing: the thermal window curtain with hook-and-loop tape attaches all round the frame, and for doors there are magnetic thermal door curtains with self-adhesive hook-and-loop tape.
Think about weight, width and everyday use
Thermal curtains are often bulkier than normal curtains. A rod that is too thin or too few fixing points can cause the fixing to come loose. If necessary, split wide windows into two panels and decide in advance where the fabric will sit when open.
If a drill-free solution is not stable enough, discuss a reversible wall or ceiling fixing with your landlord. An agreed installation is safer than an improvised system.
Heat protection without structural changes
Even without drilling, a good fit makes the difference: cover the window opening and the edges at the sides, and choose a length that suits the radiator and the walkway. A curtain complements the window seal but does not repair a leaky window.
