Trend oder nur trendy? Warum nicht alles, was gerade angesagt ist, Bestand hat

Trend or just trendy? Why not everything that's currently popular lasts.

It's that time of year again: a new year begins, and with 2025 comes countless lists of interior design trends that supposedly no one can miss. Trends fascinate us – new ideas give us the feeling of being on the cutting edge, of belonging, and of "doing everything right."

Trends certainly play an important role in interior design. They showcase new materials, innovative solutions, and creative approaches. At the same time, they influence our purchasing decisions more than we often realize.

That's precisely why it's worth approaching trends with a degree of caution. Not everything that's currently popular will last. So, before enthusiastically embracing every new trend, it's important to understand the difference between a genuine trend and something merely fashionable.

Trend vs. Trendy – what's the difference?

Terms like "must-have trends," "trends you'll love," or "the most important interior trends for 2025" are everywhere. But just because something is extremely popular right now doesn't automatically mean it's a long-term trend.

What's trendy today can be gone tomorrow. A true trend, on the other hand, is usually based on tried-and-tested design elements that recur and have proven themselves over decades – or even centuries.

Many so-called trends are actually part of a design cycle. They never really went away, but are merely experiencing a new phase of attention.

Timeless classics that keep coming back

Wallpaper is a good example of this. Even though it is currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity, it is by no means a fleeting fad. Wallpaper has been a part of interior design for centuries and is an integral element of traditional home decor in many European countries.

Anyone considering wallpapering their walls needn't worry about following a fleeting trend. With high-quality materials and timeless patterns, this decision will remain stylish for years to come.

The same is true for classic subway tiles. There was a time when they dominated almost every kitchen and bathroom. Today they are less in the spotlight – but they remain a safe, elegant, and timeless choice. This illustrates that while attention may fluctuate, their design value remains.

The same applies to curtains. Even though they are particularly prominent at the moment, they have never disappeared from interior design. In many countries, textile window decorations have always been considered a matter of course – functional, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing all at once.

Those who opt for high-quality curtains are not investing in a short-term trend, but in a design element with a long tradition and high design flexibility.

When trends age too quickly

The greatest risk in blindly following trends lies in their short lifespan. What seems modern today can appear outdated in just a few years. Spaces based solely on current fads often age faster than expected.

Another aspect to consider is that excessive focus on trends can cause living spaces to lose their personality. If many furnishings are too similar, the result is often the impression of a catalog or magazine page – rather than a home.

A timelessly designed space, on the other hand, grows with its inhabitants. It adapts to changing phases of life, can be further developed, and yet remains harmonious.

Conclusion

Trends can inspire and open up new perspectives. But truly lasting spaces are created when classic elements are combined with personal choices.

Those who don't follow every short-term hype, but instead rely on proven materials, quality and their own taste, create a home with character – one that not only looks good today, but will also impress tomorrow.
