Unpopuläre Meinung: Warum das große Deckenlicht seinen Platz verdient

Unpopular opinion: Why the large ceiling light deserves its place

In recent years, a trend has emerged on social media: "Never turn on the main overhead light." Many interior design influencers advocate for purely ambient lighting, table and floor lamps – anything but the bright main light. However, from a practical point of view, this trend only makes limited sense.

Ceiling lights are not merely decorative. They have a clear function: to illuminate rooms evenly, provide orientation, and facilitate tasks. And above all: they can certainly create a cozy atmosphere – if used correctly.

Why does the big light have such a bad reputation?

Often, the problem is that older ceiling lights appear too cold, too harsh, or poorly distributed. A room with harsh LED light can quickly feel uncomfortable. But that doesn't mean you have to do without ceiling lighting altogether – it simply means it should be optimized.

With the right light fixture, warm light and a suitable dimmer, even a ceiling light can become pleasant and homey.

1. Ceiling lighting is essential for functional areas.

dining room

A well-positioned chandelier – ideally centered above the dining table – ensures that faces, conversations, and food are clearly visible. Warm white light also creates a pleasant atmosphere.

study or home office

For activities such as reading, writing, or drawing, even lighting is essential. Diffused ceiling lights prevent harsh shadows and promote focused work.

Kitchen

Few rooms rely as heavily on light as the kitchen. Ceiling spotlights, pendant lights above the island, and lights above the sink make all work processes easier – especially in the evenings.

Living room

Not every living room has room for multiple floor lamps. A good ceiling light – preferably dimmable – ensures that the room remains flexible in its use, for example when playing, tidying up, or reading.

2. How can the bright light be made more comfortable?

  • Replace the light bulbs: Warm white (2,700–3,000 K) creates a soft and pleasant light. Frosted glass bulbs further diffuse the light.
  • Install a dimmer switch: The most important step. Dimmed light instantly creates atmosphere.
  • Choose lamps with shades or frosted glass: These diffuse light, avoid glare and create a soft, homely atmosphere.
  • Combining multiple light sources: The main light remains functional, but is harmoniously complemented by floor, table and wall lamps.

3. Why you shouldn't demonize the bright light

There are many situations where bright light is not only useful, but necessary:

  • Cleaning and tidying
  • Keep an eye on children while they are playing
  • Cooking and food preparation
  • Crafting, reading, or other activities

Functional, well-planned lighting is not a matter of style – it is part of a thoughtful, modern home.

Conclusion: Use the bright light – but do it right

Demonizing ceiling lights is neither practical nor realistic. Instead, it's worthwhile to consciously design the lighting: warm light colors, dimmable technology, diffused glass, and well-positioned fixtures.

If you take these tips into account, your ceiling light will no longer be perceived as "too harsh" – but as a flexible, pleasant and meaningful part of your home.
