Designing a functional and well-thought-out bedroom
The bedroom is our personal sanctuary – a place to rest, read, and unwind after a long day. There's hardly anything better than coming into a quiet, warm, and inviting bedroom in the evening, one that exudes security and comfort.
But for all the aesthetics, one thing should never be forgotten: function. After all, what good is a beautiful bedroom if you can't sleep well in it?
Planning the room and floor plan correctly
The first step in designing a bedroom is understanding the available space. Room size plays a crucial role here. The bed is the central piece of furniture and should blend harmoniously into the room.
A bed that's too large can quickly leave no room for bedside tables or restrict freedom of movement. If there's hardly any space to move around freely, it's worth reconsidering the bed size.

Also consider which other pieces of furniture you really need: an armchair for reading, a chest of drawers, a wardrobe, or perhaps a dressing table? Even though the bed is the focal point, a well-designed bedroom thrives on the interplay of all its elements. Clarify your needs and the floor plan before you begin decorating.
More atmosphere through graduated lighting
Light plays a central role in the bedroom – especially in the evening. As the sun sets, the light should also become softer. Dimmable light bulbs help to reduce harsh overhead light.
However, the most pleasant effect is achieved when ceiling lights are completely switched off in the evening and table lamps are used instead to create a calm, relaxed lighting atmosphere.

Additional wall lamps or lights next to or above the bed create depth and a warm, cozy atmosphere. Multiple light sources at different heights make the room appear significantly calmer and more inviting.
Sleep requires darkness
Window treatments are a crucial element of a functional bedroom. Darkness is essential for restful sleep. To avoid disrupting the natural sleep rhythm, windows should be reliably protected from incoming light.

Whether curtains or Roman blinds – high-quality blackout curtains or blackout linings are essential, especially in the bedroom. They reduce streetlight, early morning light, and other disruptive light sources, creating optimal conditions for deep and undisturbed sleep.
The correct height for the bedside table
One detail that is often underestimated is the height of the bedside table. If lamps, books, or your smartphone regularly fall off the table, it is usually too low.
Ideally, a bedside table should be at the same height as, or about 5 to 15 centimeters higher than, the top of the mattress. This makes it easy to reach items without them being easily knocked over.

A well-proportioned bedside table not only contributes to functionality, but also ensures more peace and order in the bedroom.
Once these basic principles are taken into account, the foundation for a functional bedroom is laid. Only then is it worthwhile to work with colors, textiles, and personal details, gradually transforming the room into a true retreat.
